Women Against Isis
Overview
In the war against the Islamic State, the only movement combating the jihadists with any effectiveness on the ground is the Kurdish resistance army. This movement is made up of both men and women fighters, forcing back the jihadists and reclaiming the land village by village. Through joining the resistance, Viyan and many other young women find freedom not only to fight, but to learn to read, write and lead. It is for this reason that many girls join the resistance, shaking off patriarchal constraints and futures already set out for them by their families. In their various roles within the resistance, these women have power and authority, even causing jihadi males to flee at their chants for fear of being killed a woman. We see the importance of the women and of the Kurdish resistance in the fight against ISIS, whilst exploring the contradictions of this Kurdish society that is modern and brave, but at the same time, conservative.

Threads of a Revolution
When artist Janet Biehl fell in love with radical American philosopher Murray Bookchin in the 1980s whilst editing his ground-breaking opus “The Ecology of Freedom”, she could never have imagined that it would one day take her halfway across the globe. Now, over 40 years later, Janet travels from America to the Middle East to witness something remarkable - how Murray’s ideas have ignited a female-led revolution in North-East Syria, where society is being rebuilt in the wake of victory over ISIS. Janet meets the women who are turning her late partner’s political theories into a modern reality, creating a grassroots communal democracy. Janet draws what she sees, and her illustrations capture the humanity of ordinary people in their struggle to self-govern. Now, at this critical moment for Syria and with this revolutionary project under renewed threat, "Threads of a Revolution" reveals a possible way forward for those prepared to fight for a new way to live.

Rojava, une utopie au cœur du chaos syrien
Spearheading the 2017 battle for Raqqa against ISIS, the Kurdish forces of Rojava tried to put together a revolutionary political vision in the Levant: gender equality, self-determination, democracy, popular self-defense, anti-sectarism... But their democratic confederalism, built on mine fields and war economy, found itself struggling between imperialist foreign forces and Turkish nationalism.

The Communes of Rojava Six Years On: Towards Many Democracies of Neighbors
Six years later sequel of "The Communes of Rojava" (2018), made in the face of some of the most dire attacks yet faced by the pluralist, women-led, radically democratic project in North and East Syria. Though deeply inspired by the Rojava Revolution, this film is not about the Kurdish and Syrian Revolutions’ influence for an activist in America.
Black Box Syria: The Dirty War

Binxet - Under the border
“Binxet – Under the border” is a journey between life and death, dignity and pain, struggle and freedom. It takes place along the 911 km of the turkish-Syrian border. On the one hand the ISIS, in the other Erdogan’s Turkey. In the middle the borders and one hope. This hope is called Rojava, only one point on the chart of a troubled region, a region of resistance and an example of grassroots democracy that speaks about gender equality, self-determination of peoples and peaceful coexistence.

BETWEEN TURKEY AND POST-ASSAD SYRIA: WHAT FUTURE FOR THE KURDS OF ROJAVA?
In Syria, the new government that overthrew Bashar al-Assad's regime on 8 December 2024 has just signed a historic agreement with the Kurds in the north-east of the country. In the heart of a country ravaged by more than 13 years of civil war, this autonomous administration of Syrian Kurdistan could well be integrated into a country that is in need of reconstruction and whose unity remains fragile. But in the north, the war has not stopped. A few kilometres away, neighbouring Turkey has been stepping up its attacks on Rojava for years, while militia abuses persist and the threat of Islamic State continues to loom. From Kobane to Raqqa via the Al-Hol prison camp... For this new long-form feature, Blast took to the roads of northern Syria in January 2025.
