Overview
Mr. Brunelli, a roomer at a boarding house, has caught the eye of Kate, the daughter of the woman who owns the house. Kate knows her mother, who doesn't want her daughter to have anything to do with her tenants, will disapprove of Mr. Brunelli, but she soon discovers that Mr. Brunelli isn't quite who she thinks he is.

Twin sisters Rosetta and Lola Gelardi live happily with their aging father, Professor Gelardi, until their Sicilian village is destroyed by an earthquake. Unable to find Lola, the professor and Rosetta move to New York, where she obtains employment as a stenographer to author Aubrey Hapgood. Rosetta captivates Aubrey and his friends, but Mildred Sanders, who had hoped to win Aubrey for herself, tries to ruin Rosetta's reputation. While the chauffeur repairs the car, she and Aubrey walk into town to find a preacher.

Lured to New York with false promises of having her play produced, Lila Lake is forced to accept a secretarial position with Mrs. Julia Hewitt, a dashing young widow secretly married to Jimmy Duval, son of Alice Duval, a prominent society leader. Alice seeks the aid of young lawyer Philip Thorne, who hires detectives to follow Julia; the latter, however, has left town with Jimmy, and Lila has agreed to impersonate her.

Mind the Paint Girl
When she is orphaned Lily Upjohn, from the London slums, becomes a chorus girl at the Pandora Theatre. During a performance a scene painter drops some paint near Lily and her screams prompt the show's composer to create a hit song "Mind the Paint Girl," which Lily makes an overnight sensation. She is courted by young officer Nicholas Jeyes and by Lord Francombe. Driving both men to near ruin she promises marriage to both but in the end choses neither.

During a fiercely contested battle, a wounded Union officer seeks refuge in a Southern home. He is discovered and assisted by Nellie Morton, who hides him from Confederate forces. Confederate officers eventually enter the home and find the officer's Union coat in the library, confirming an enemy presence. Despite the discovery and the high tension of the search, the Union officer manages to escape his pursuers. As they prepare to give chase a courier arrives with news of General Lee's surrender, halting the conflict.
